Chosen as New Zealand's capital by the first governor, Lieutenant William Hobson, it remained that way until 1865 when the title was transferred to Wellington. Religion also spread during this time, with the Roman Catholic Church built in Freemans Bay and the Church of England built in Parnell. The government centre developed around the Princes Street area was the core for the Government House, parliament, the court and the barrack for the British 58th Regiment as well homes of many of Auckland's leading citizens. While initial development focused on Commercial Bay at the bottom of Queen Street, by 1864 the limits of Auckland were Parnell in the east and Freemans Bay in the west.
Merchants and factory owners alike saw the advantages of land close to the port of Auckland. Aucklanders remain positive about the city centre despite major construction. They also told us that they were more likely to visit the city by walking or cycling than they did in May last year. Aucklanders attitudes of the city centre haven't markedly changed since the survey was first undertaken in May last year, despite the significant scale of development and construction in the city.
They are also generally supportive about the changes underway, and many felt that that the city centre will improve once the development is complete. There was also a reduction in the number of Aucklanders who mentioned congestion and gridlock as an issue in relation to city centre access. We’re undertaking some more detailed analysis of the survey along with other information including spending to get a good idea of any emerging trends for the city centre. The Auckland City Centre is the economic and cultural hub of the region and the pre eminent business and retail centre of New Zealand.
It is a significant generator of Auckland’s GDP and is estimated to contribute close to 13 billion annually to the region i. The combined value of property within our area is 8. A substantial proportion of Aucklanders visit or use the city centre at least two or three times a month for leisure discretionary spending activities including going to restaurants, visiting a bar, seeing a performance or to shop. Auckland Council’s website indicates that planned construction activity in the city centre over the next years is at a scale the city has never seen before, with expectations of investment of 10 billion planned from private industry and 2 billion of public investment. Auckland’s Mayor Phil Goff has highlighted the importance of Auckland’s city centre. His vision for Auckland is an inclusive and diverse city where talent and enterprise can thrive.
Some of the mayor’s priorities for the CBD are working on congestion and building a stadium in the city centre. It is the hub for some of New Zealand's and the world's most prestigious corporations. The city centre is Auckland's key transport hub, including Britomart, offering buses, trains and ferries in and around the Auckland's region, including the airport bus to Auckland's international airport. Auckland's city centre is easily accessible to all people within the region
