What you should know about Te Whau Vineyard
Moira, being a Chardonnay lover, persuaded him to also plant 1,00 Chardonnay vines on a more gentle slope as well. In the premature 1990’s Tony was interested in Waiheke Island and its wines at a time when the beginning pioneering vineyards on the island were enjoying huge win with their Bordeaux style Cabernet merlots. Experience Waiheke’s finest cuisine, premium five star wines and stunning sea views. Easter Open Saturday 15 April for lunch and dinner and originate Easter Sunday for lunch.
Currently we have four diverse vintages of The Point available for tasting and purchase. Sales are by mail order at the cellar door and at the winery restaurant and tasting room. It’s a safe bet that the wine will cellar very well becoming smoother and more intricate with bottle development. We are a very trivial vineyard, one of the fewest in New Zealand and do not buy in grapes from other vineyards, so our tasting is of our own wine, which is also available for sale.
Here at Te wham we predominantly grow red varieties for our Bordeaux blend, The Point and have this available for wine tasting. Once on Waiheke Island cars can be hired from Waiheke Rental Cars or Waiheke Auto Rentals. Our mere by mere planting of cave clone Sarah produces very low yields resulting in an elegant, intense Rhone style wine that ages beautifully. On the valley floor under our steep north facing vineyard slope we grow three clones of Chardonnay.
Our vineyard restaurant is located on the top smooth of our winery and features new Fresh Zealand Pacific Rim cuisine click here for our stylish Menu and one of the choice wine lists in Fresh Zealand. A 40 tiny ferry ride through Auckland Barbour and the inner Hauraki Gulf takes you to Matiatia Wharf on Waiheke Island where taxis and shuttles are available to transport you to the vineyard, a 15 tiny drive. Our Chardonnay is again handed harvested, and then bunch pressed, cold stabilized and fermented in new French oak
