An Acquired Brain Injury can be the result of trauma or of medical problems. Whatever the cause the resulting damage can impair the individual's abilities both physically and cognitively. Recovery depends on a lot of things for instance the severity of the injury and the 'knock on' effect of bruising inside the brain. Most people with brain injury keep getting better slowly over many months, even years, but that could mean just getting better than they are now. difficulties with thinking clearly, maintaining concentration, problem solving and completing projects.

We work as a team and team with partners and the community to share our knowledge and skill and to deliver a range of activities and services to achieve the best outcomes for those affected by a brain injury. Highlights and facilitates access to support, services and activities that are available to those affected by brain injury. Promotes community awareness of brain injury and its effects and encourages community support.
We have also begun a publicity campaign which will, we hope, enable us to reach families who were unaware of the society, and also make the general public more aware of the problems that follow on from the head injury . Without our sponsors, volunteers and the goodwill of many others in the community, organisations such as Headway Brain Injury Auckland would not function

We provide support, navigation and education to Aucklanders affected by brain injury. The brain injury landscape is complicated and in the early stages people don’t know where to go for advice, how to request assistance and how to deal with a host of practical consequences. Our charity was formed in 1981 by a group of parents, partners and other carers who found little support in the community post injury. It may be that attending a Support Group is useful for you at this stage, equally if you are the person who had the injury or are a partner family other carer. Brain injury is a 'hidden' disability and there is still a lot of misunderstanding about its nature and consequences. Contributing to working parties and focus groups with research and government agencies. By promoting innovative brain injury education and whanau support initiatives such as BIWAP Brain Injury Whanau Action Project. By promoting the Community Based Rehabilitation for Acquired Brain Injury certificate courses held at AUT Auckland City Campus. Our liaison officers are available to help you navigate this landscape where possible or to refer you on to more expert advice as the need arises. We may be able to advise you on this but please note we are not a specialist ACC advocacy service. Our liaison officers will be able to explain the different roles of these clinicians and if necessary speak to them on your behalf if you have concerns. If you are going to a clinician for a particular assessment or consultation, a liaison officer may be able to accompany you as a support person. A number of financial issues can arise after a brain injury, particularly if the injured person was the primary income earner or ran a business. The liaison officer can advise you on these matters including referring you on for budgeting assistance or other professional help as may be required. Membership of groups, from football teams to book clubs and voluntary societies, gives us a sense of social identity. The strength comes from the shared struggle to adapt to a new lifestyle, from inevitably finding that someone in the group has experienced your difficulty as well and frequently is able to suggest a way to deal with the consequences. A mixed interest’ group catering for people with brain injury and their families, whanau or carers. The format is quite varied and includes regular guest speakers on a range of topics.
